St. Louis Hosts Engineering Students
Organizations representing all sectors of the St. Louis masonry industry teamed together to provide 32 senior and junior Civil Engineering students from the University of Missouri at Rolla a detailed view of modern masonry construction.
Jointly sponsored by the Missouri Chapter of the American Concrete Association and the National Concrete Masonry Association, the students traveled to St. Louis to visit manufacturing, training and job sites representing today's masonry industry.
First stop for the touring students was F. F. Kirchner. Inc., where they saw the the automated manufacturing process for concrete masonry units. While at Kirchner's plant, they were given a demonstration of bricklaying by apprentices from Bricklayers Local No. 1 of Missouri. Some students tried their hand at spreading mortar and laying brick in the demonstration wall.
During an informal lunch stop at the St. Louis Masonry Ceatre, the students saw presentations on new trends in masonry construction and were given an introduction to the new ACI/ASCE Masonry Code 530.
The afternoon was spent at a construction site where Donald C. Grant of Grant Bricklaying Company is using concrete masonry units to build reinforced load-bearing walls. At the site, they saw the combination of concrete block, reinforcing rods, and grout that produce efficient load-bearing walls.
"Too often we take brick and block construction for granted," one student observed during a pause in the tour. "I have a better understanding of how masonry is used in today's construction industry."
Other St. Louis s organizations organizations supporting the Oct. 28 tour included Majestic Building Material Company, the Mason Contractors Association of St. Louis, and the St. Louis Masonry Institute.
BRAILSFORD INDUSTRIES
Brailsford Industries, Inc., a 16 year old masonry construction firm, located in Springville, Utah is introducing sculptured masonry. The services include: the initial planning session; sketches and drawings; sculpting: firing of the brick; shipping and when requested the installation. Jerry Brailsford, a lifetime artist, has over 28 years of experience as a mason contractor. His work has recently been featured at the Salt Lake City Parade of Homes and at the Springville Art Museum.
