National Design Award
JSA, Inc., an architecture, planning and interior design firm based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire has received an Award of Excellence from the National Commercial Builders Council for the firm's renovation of the former Kearsarge Mill building into commercial office space. Built in 1845, the five-story brick and granite structure was leveled to a single story in the late 1800's when a fire swept through its upper floors. The remaining story features 19-foot ceilings, prompting JSA designers to add a mezzanine level over almost half the original space. JSA served as both architect and developer for the project. Construction services were provided by CSI Limited, Portsmouth, N.Η.

NY Expands Excellence Awards
In response to the overwhelming acceptance and success of its first-ever award program for Excellence in Masonry. The Masonry Institute of New York City and Long Island has increased the total monetary award the program will provide in its second annual event from $5000 to $10,000. A $5000 check will be awarded to the architectural firm submitting the winning entry in each of two categories. Class I. Institutional Building and Class II. Commercial, Industrial or Residential Building.
According to Anthony J. Zotollo, Masonry Institute Chairman, the award program was established last year "to recognize and acknowledge excellence in design, multiple use of masonry materials and workmanship." This year's dual-awards program establishes two distinct building classifications for awards. Entry deadline for the 1989 program is Friday, May 19.
Six rules govern each award. The designer must be a Registered Architect. The Masonry Contractor involved in the project must be a union contractor employing bricklayer members of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen District Council of New York City and Long Island. The building entered must be located either in one of the five New York City borroughs or in one of the Long Island's two Counties, and must have been substantially completed during 1988. Finally, in presenting the entry by the May 19 deadline, two 8" x 11" color photographs as well as a description of the exterior and interior wall systems used must accompany the submittal.
Entry forms for the 1989 Excellence in Masonry Awards Program are available by calling the Masonry Institute of New York City and Long Island at (516) 487-5400 or by Faxing a request for an Entry Form to the Institute (516) 487-0211.
