with profile units at the piers. Decorative relief has also been incorporated into the wall's design.
The use of a masonry wall system was approved by the Connecticut Department of Transportation in 1985. Until that time, the use of materials in sound barriers had been limited to wood and preformed concrete.
The Masonry Institute of Connecticut (MIC) devoted some four years and thousands of dollars to the research, development and promotion of the masonry sound barrier project prior to its approval by DOT.
The demonstration sound barrier wall was designed by Larry Frazier of Frazier, Lamson & Budlong. Architects, East Hartford. Siegmar Knebl of Knebl & Associates, Ham-den, are the project design engineers.
Supporting the MIC masonry effort to build the demonstration wall were the Northeast Cement Shippers Association, the Connecticut Masonry Industry Advancement Fund, the New England Concrete Masonry Association and the Mason Contractors Association of Connecticut.
