mason contractor on the project, while Blalock Brothers, Inc. of Sevierville, Tennessee, was the general contractor. "This building is a remarkably fresh solution to a building type that is all too often unmarked by fresh solutions," according to the judges.
"The integration of the building and site and the integration of various functions and volumetric parts into a pleasing, unified whole is extremely well done.
"The multi-leveled interior, 'street is a dynamic organizational spline which creates dramatic interior space and helps give the center its feeling of excitement. It is a wonderful communal space, a metaphorical 'mainstreet'," the judges said.
Darrell Lanham, executive director of MIT, presented the winners with plaques at the Design Visions '89 Awards Dinner at the Hermitage Hotel in Nashville. Similar awards will be presented to the building owners later this year.
