Hospital Revitalization In New England
A 154,000 square foot addition has been added to the Youville Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts replacing 180 of the facility's chronic care beds, the main entrance, laundry and gift shop. The design by Payette Associates, Architects and Planners of Boston, were awarded an Honorable Mention by the American Institute of Architect's New England Council.
Recognizing its affiliation with a religious order, the addition's architectural vocabulary refers to the traditions of the institution's history. These references can be seen in the ribbed arches, columns, an arcade and a tower at the entrance to the building. The rhythm of the arches is repeated in the windows of the upper floors. The tower's form is familiar to the many religious and academic institutions of the Cambridge skyline.
The masonry, a honey yellow that matches the older building, is accented by limestone springstones, a parapet on the tower and lintels on the facade. Other masonry details include soldier coursing and cobbling that subtly refer to the more ornate decorative portions of the older building. Mason Contractor for the project was G. J. Luchetti, Framingham with the masonry supplier being Spaulding Brick Co., Inc., Somerville.
The addition is shaped in an L, and extends from the older building and turns to establish a courtyard. At the intersection of the L, a multi-tiered atrium was created on a diagonal. Within this triangular space, lounges are oriented toward the ornate facade of the original building. Below, the elaborately detailed brick courtyard further activates the visual experience of the long term patients.

The first step in a long-awaited plan to bring Exeter area patients, physicians and medical services closer together was taken with the completion of the Perry Medical Services Building at Exeter Hospital in Exeter, New Hampshire.
The three-story, 37.000 square foot facility will house eight physicians' practices, the hospital's business office and related fiscal services, Hematology Oncology Services and the Center for Occupational Health.
Designed by JSA Inc., an award-winning architectural, planning and interior design firm in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the structure also serves as the hospital's new main entrance. Access to the various hospital departments has been simplified by project architects, allowing visitors and patients to follow clearly defined and more convenient pathways to the hospital's inpatient and outpatient services, administrative areas and physicians' offices.
Built at a cost of $5 million, the Perry Medical Services Building is the first building to be constructed as part of an overall master planning effort at Exeter Hospital.
