Awards Program
Rockefeller Research Laboratories at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center New York City
Joining the Sloan Kettering Cancer Research Center in New York City is the new Rockefeller Research Laboratories designed by Davis, Brody & Associates/Russo + Sonder. The structure houses the bio-medical and chemistry laboratories as well as a conference center and below grade parking for 260 cars. A typical laboratory floor, of 19,000 square feet, is designed with a core facility, 32 laboratory modules and 10 private offices for researchers.
The decision to use masonry construction for the exterior enclosure of the building was based on several factors. First, all the buildings surrounding the award winning structure are masonry. Second, it was necessary to respect the character of the existing residential and institutional neighborhood. Third, the aesthetic aspects of masonry walls were considered in respect to their scale and texture.
In visually relating the new building to Memorial Hospital, located across 67th Street, the architects selected same brick color combination, using an economy-size brick to accommodate the different building scale. Instead of using glazed brick, which faces all the other hospital campus buildings, the architects chose a clay-coated brick that provides visual similarity to the other buildings.
Architect for the new structure is Brody & Associates/Russo + Sonder with Masonry by Sal Vio Construction Corporation, Bronx, New York.
this year awarded $10,000 to the winning architectural firms a $5,000 check to Brody & Associates/Russo + Sonder and a $5,000 check to Skidmore Owings & Merrill for their respective designs of the two structures. Presentation of the checks was made at a ceremony in November held at the Helmsley Plaza Hotel which also honored the two Mason Contractors Sal Vio Construction Corporation (Rockefeller Research Lab) and LaSala Industries, Inc. (Worldwide Plaza). "The program was established to recognize and acknowledge excellence in design, workmanship, volume and multiple use of masonry materials" stated Institute president Anthony Zotollo. The awards were given for two classes of building-Class 1, Institutional Buildings and Class II. Commercial, Industrial or Residential.
