Forty Participate in Minnesota Tourney

THE FIRST annual Humphrey Golf tournament was held in mid-September in Mound, Minnesota. The tournament was a benefit scheduled to raise money for the Humphrey Foundation, a scholarship fund established by Shiley Masonry Products to encourage young men and women to enter the local bricklayer's apprenticeship program.

The foursome of Mike Frantz, Mark Peck, Jack Gray and Wally Jones took home the championship trophy with a four under par score. Some forty players turned out for the event, and enough money was raised to send two applicants through the apprenticeship program in 1992. The 1992 scholarships will be presented at the annual convention of the Minnesota Concrete and Masonry Contractors Association in February.

Slight Increase in Building Cost Index

THE AUSTIN Company's Index of Industrial Building Costs rose by 3 percent for the third quarter of 1981, closing at 1140. At the end of the second quarter, the index was logged at 1136. In 1990, the third quarter index closed at 1127.

Labor and material costs remained stable in most parts of the country, while small regional increases were noted in the west and midwest. The cost of labor, conduit and copper wire showed a nominal increase in the midwest.

The west noted nominal increases in mechanical and electrical engineering materials, but slight decreases in concrete and metal prices.

The Austin Index is based on a quarterly pricing of a standard steel framed manufacturing plant and its adjoining office building. Austin is an international organization of consultants, engineers and constructors, with forty offices around the world.
