Problems of Safety
THE COVER of your November/December 1991 issue shows a most imaginative use of brick masonry. It was while I was studying the lively use of colour and pattern achieved in these apartments that my eye was drawn to the problem of safety that could mar the enjoyment of this building.
The windows extend to the floor, particularly on the upper floors. What appears to be "patio doors" are protected by open horizontal railings. These guardrails are very climable and open to the point where a child could crawl through the railing.
While the building is designed for the elderly, grandchildren could be frequent visitors and the building use could change. Please pass on these concerns to the architects. They are to be commended for a most handsome building. A sensitive solution to the potential problem of safety is required.-D.C. Patterson, Superintendent of Design and Construction, North York Board of Education, North York, Ontario.
A MAGAZINE is only as good as the input it receives from all kinds of reputable sources. One of the more important sources is comments from its readers. Readers are invited to express their constructive or critical opinions on any subject concerning masonry construction, or any factor affecting the masonry industry, including government, economics, legislation or whatever. We welcome all letters, and although all must be signed the writer may request that we withhold his name. Remember, this is the reader's column and we expect you to use it as such. Let's hear from you.
