Michigan Architects Receive Design Awards
FIVE MEMBER FIRMS of AIA Michigan received honor awards early in March at the 17th annual masonry awards banquet of the Masonry Institute of Michigan, held at the Northfield Hilton Inn, Troy, Michigan. The awards program judges projects on the basis of excellence in design as well as appropriate and innovative use of unit masonry construction laid in the traditional manner. Architects honored were: Brady L. Case, Battle Creek, for the Willard Beach Bathhouse, Battle Creek; Quinn Evans, Ann Arbor, for the Sherzer Hall Restoration at Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti; Greiner, Inc., Grand Rapids, for the Hillside Elementary School, Farmington Hills, Victor Saroki and Associates, Birmingham, for the Merrill Par Park Townhomes, Birmingham; and Thomas Strat and Associates, Troy, for the Macomb County District Court and Sheriff's Substation, Romeo. Pictured above is the Macomb County District Court and Sheriff's Substation. Masonry contractor for the building was Jones and Simpson, Flint, and concrete masonry supplier was Grand Blanc Cement Products, Grand Blanc. This building is based on a contemporary interpretation of Greco-Roman design. Although the Greeks and Romans used marble and granite for their government buildings, the materials and systems used in this building were selected to emulate the textures and sense of permanence of cut stone at a fraction of the cost, while providing many times the energy efficiency.

Most recommendations for bonding materials made by the supplier are usually based upon a job failure in the field, not the laboratory-so-play it safe when you can and let your competitor be the laboratory that finds which bonding material will not work.
