COVER
AFTER ALMOST 40 years in Memorial Stadium, the Baltimore Orioles have taken to a brand new home field, Oriole Park in Camden Yards.

Set in the thriving heart of Baltimore's Inner Harbor downtown area, the Orioles new home relies on brick to reference a variety of time honored traditions: the city's own tradition of brick construction, the look and feel of America's old-time single-purpose brick ballparks, and the historic design themes of the stadium's immediate neighbors, including a circa 1900 B&O Railroad warehouse of brick.

In fact, in the design of the 46,000 seat ball park, the warehouse has evolved into a visually and aesthetically dominant element. Rising behind and above the outfield wall, it forms a signature backdrop for every homerun and long camera shot angled to right field.

To adapt the warehouse for its new, prominent role, the existing brick was repointed and repaired. A previous addition to the north end of the warehouse was demolished and rebuilt to resemble the south wall, complete with jack arch windows set into an arched reveal and an intricate brick cornice treatment.

Because the original warehouse brick was no longer available, a new brick that had a similar color and texture with an appropriately aged appearance was developed. The resulting material, a warm reddish-brown, sand-molded brick, was used not only in the warehouse renovation, but throughout the stadium itself, integrating the two structures.

The warehouse formed a basis for the stadium's brick detailing and fenestration, as well.
