End dams are required wherever flashings terminate. For example, flashings over lintels require end dams.

Any mistakes in the installation of flashings will jeopardize the performance of the masonry. Repair of faulty flashing is expensive and disruptive for the building occupants. It pays to do it right the first time.

Port of New Orleans Installs Pavers

1. 5-million concrete pavers used to cover some eight acres of Port of New Orleans' container yard. Second site preparation of some 131,000 square feet is already underway.

THE INSTALLATION of 345,000 square feet of concrete pavers is nearing completion at the Nashville Street Yard in the Port of New Orleans. The project is one of the first paver projects to be subject to loads from shipping containers.

Concrete Paver Institute (CPI) member North Syracuse Construction mechanically placed the 1.5-million pavers, covering some eight acres. Mechanical installation equipment manufactured by CPI member Optimas America was used to place the 90 degree herringbone paver pattern. The Optimas machine grabs a 10 square foot layer of pavers manufactured in the herringbone pattern and places them on the screeded bedding sand. Production of installed units averaged about 700 square feet per day with one machine. The general contractor for the site work is M. Matt Duran from St. Martinville, Louisiana.

The first U.S. port project for container traffic of substantial size was the 240,000 square feet at the Seagirt Terminal in the Port of Baltimore built in 1990. The first applications subject to container traffic in North America are at the Canadian Pacific intermodal facility in Calgary and the Albert intermodal terminal in Edmonton and Calgary.
