Over the two years following the initial 42 week training the apprentice will have the opportunity of taking the Certificate of Qualifications examination providing he has successfully completed the requirements of three specialty modules, 1,600 hours on the worksite and advanced through the modified apprenticeship programme.

The training programme, hopefully, will assist the future of the industry regarding the knowledge and productivity of the mason along with the skills learned through the current training programme.

Forecast Moderate Housing Comeback

THE NATIONAL Association of Homebuilders, at its semiannual construction forecast conference on October 30, predicted a dramatic increase in single family housing starts for 1992, followed by a moderate increase for the next two years.

NAHB chief economist David Seides predicted that single family housing starts would be up more than twenty-two percent in 1992, with 1.026-million starts predicted.

Moderate gains of nine percent and 5.5 percent in 1994 were predicted. That represents 1.118-million single family starts in 1993 and 1.180-million in 1994.

The greatest gains in single family housing starts were predicted for the Central and Midwest regions, along with the South Atlantic region.

George L. Plumb, MCAA's Legal Counsel, Dies

GEORGE L. PLUMB, who served as MCAA's Legal Counsel for more than twenty-five years, died September 22nd. Plumb, 56, was a partner in the firm of Pedersen and Houpt, Chicago, and recently formed his own firm in Winnetka, Illinois.

He was co-counsel for the Bricklayers and Trowel Trades International Pension Fund, Washington, D.C.

Plumb was highly respected for his broad knowledge of the various labor laws. He had a deep and astute perception of jurisdictional matters and a keen sense of the issues which made him a most effective advisor to MCAA members.

His genial personality and wit, which made him hosts of friends throughout the industry, was matched by his willingness to help others on such issues as housing for the elderly.

Plumb is survived by his wife, Debra; four daughters, Laura Maxwell, Julia, Jennifer and Sarah; a son, Michael; and a sister.
