LEVIN PORTER Associates, Dayton, received an Architectural Excellence award from the Masonry Institute of Dayton for its design of Wright State University's new Russ Engineering Center.

The 173,110 square foot structure for the university's college of engineering and computer science uses a four story atrium to organize the space and bring in natural light. The atrium also serves as a visual focus and provides a sense of orientation for the visitor at each level. Large amounts of brick, bronzed glass, cast stone accents and glass block are used to create the large structure's light, open atmosphere.

Judges said the materials used, inside and out, successfully bespoke the building's high technology function and integrated it with the rest of the Fairborn campus. Community response to the new center has been one of "great pride."

Korda-Nemeth Engineering, KMCO, Inc. and Snyder Brick and Block were cited for engineering, craftsmanship and supply on project.
