# Precast Stone Adds Faces to Warm Your Hearth
By PAUL SNYDER
President, Unique Productions
A feeling of grandeur and majesty are captured in this and other precast fireplace facings. Carving models in clay or plaster to capture fine detail is the initial step in the process. A mold, usually of rubber, plaster or glass-fiber reinforced plastic, is then made from the model. From this mold the final casting is made, with the resulting finish closely resembling that of natural stone. In many cases a final etching process, using hydrochloric acid, is used to expose the fine aggregate, leaving a brilliant color with a surface that resists staining. Precast concrete facings, whether highly ornamental or basic cut stone design, can fill a home or office with feelings of warmth, ruggedness, elegance, nobility and grandeur.
