than is typical in this type of project, which helps to compensate for the tight units size imposed by funding agencies.

Commercial/industrial winner was the BCE Place Galleria. Architect for the project was Bregman and Ham-ann. Clifford Masonry was the masonry contractor. Thames Valley Brick and Tile was the brick and glass block supplier. Block supplier was Canadian Building Materials. James N. Scoltt Cut Stone was the stone supplier for the project.

The BCE Galleria, commented the judges, was the natural choice in the commercial/industrial category for a number of reasons. The elegant and restrained use of materials creates an atmosphere of sophistication in the galleria, while the soaring forms of the steel structure uplift the viewer. The design exhibits exceptional harmony between the building proper and the artwork.

One of the most compelling aspects of the project was the wide ranges of types of masonry used. The project involved restoration of a historic masonry building, use of prefabricated brick panels, brick laid in place, and glass block flooring, all working seamlessly to form a unified and stunning whole.

Details concerning Woodsworth College, winner in the institutional category, appear elsewhere on this page with cover photo credits.

COVER

PICTURED on this month's cover is the Woodsworth College building at the University of Toronto, winner of the Toronto Masonry Promotion Fund Masonry Project Design Competition award in the instutitional category.

Associated architects for the project were Barton Myers Architects and Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects. Masonry contractor was G and A Masonry. Brick supplier was Canada Brick. Primeau Argo Block was the supplier of concrete block.

Pittsburgh Corning supplied the glass block. Lacroix and Sons (St. Sebastien. Quebec) supplied the granite.

Competition judges were impressed with the architect's treatment of the building's context. The design shows a marked sensitivity with the historic setting. While the building relates well to the surrounding traditional buildings, it doesn't suffer from being historicist. Designers emulated qualities of the historic buildings without imitating them.

Great care was taken in the selection of materials. Granite, brick, glass and steel are used in a harmonious fashion, creating a harmonious transition between materials. The brick was manufactured specifically for the project, showing the innovation and cooperation between the industry and the architectural community.
