a metric version of the Load and Resistance Factor Design manual in 1994. And of course, the appendix of the ACI 530/ASCE 5/TMS 402 Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures contains corresponding metric equations and tables.

These materials aid the engineer working on federal projects who is urged to use hard conversions whenever possible. This means an equivalent design using metric numbers and metric materials from start to finish. Soft conversion of a design done using U.S. customary units is discouraged.

Some design aids provide metric units in addition to U.S. customary units. Examples which contain information in metric units include the Brick Institute of America's Technical Notes on Brick Construction' and the newly published textbook Masonry Structures, Behavior and Design. There are also guides to using metric, such as the Metric Guide for Federal Construction by NIBS, which are useful in creating drawings and specifications which must show only metric units.

The masonry industry has prepared for the change to metrication by incorporating a metric appendix to the Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures and providing design aids and journals which use metric.

Materials

The conversion to metric offers the opportunity for standardization and rationalization of building products and materials. Modular size products and specifications and design manuals using hard metric simplify design for the engineer and architect.

Production of modular metric size building products is not always simple. Many products must undergo a Continued on Page 42
