THE LAST WORD

By GENE ADAMS, SPD, ASBPE, NADTP
Editor, Masonry Magazine

WHO'S YOUR TOUGHEST COMPETITOR? The glass and slab contractor who's getting all of the low cost high rise housing work in your community, the metal building contractor who just landed the state's biggest prison job or the contractor who's sparked a revival in wooden sided building construction in one hot selling subdivision after another? Or, none of the above? Chances are you are your own worst enemy, particularly if you try to go it alone in meeting tough competition. All of the foregoing types of competitors have mounted aggressive campaigns to wrest markets away from mason contractors. You can effectively compete, however stiff the competition, by joining your local, regional and national masonry associations. Most have aggressive promotional programs in place. They need your membership to make them work. Join today and be convinced of the miracle of numbers!

Garth Miller, a charter member of the Masonry Magazine Advisory Board, is doffing his hard hat and hanging up his trowel with the announcement of his retirement as director of the Ontario Masonry Industry Promotion fund. Garth has been a dedicated supporter of Masonry Magazine. We'll miss his encouragement and words of wisdom. We wish him Godspeed with a fair wind at his back, whatever his future endeavors might be.

Welcome aboard to new Advisory Board member Howard Droz. An architect with the firm of Smith Hinchman and Grylls, Detroit, he's an active member of ASTM Committees C12 on Mortar and C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units. A member of the Masonry Society, he's chairman of their Construction Practices Committee. We can't thank members of our Advisory Board enough for their time and efforts in providing guidance in all phases of MCAA publications operations, from circulation to contents. A dedicated, hardworking group of industry professionals, they deserve most of the credit for the positive changes you've been seeing in content and quality of Masonry Magazine and MCAA Update.

We're excited about our latest project to be launched at Masonry Expo '95 in Las Vegas next year-Masonry Expo Convention Dailies to be published each day during the Expo and delivered to the rooms of all registrants before dawn. Gene Adams
