Spotlight on Excellence
The Pickering Civic Centre
ALL THE entries in Masonry Magazine's Excellence in Masonry Competition were winners. Each project had been honored with an award in a local or national competition. This requirement ensured that every project was of an excellent caliber.
The Pickering Civic Centre and Library, in Pickering, Ontario was one of the many outstanding entries in the contest. Designed by Shore, Tilbe, Irwin and Partners and built by Taylor Woodrow Construction Limited with masonry work by Deluca and Mascarin the Civic Centre houses a municipal government building, a public library and a central entrance pavilion with a clock tower.
The municipal portion of the Centre was designed to distinguish between space used for civil debate and those in which the administration of the government is conducted. The council chamber has an environment of easy formality where Councilor and Elector may engage in debate. The circular shape of the chamber is immediately recognizable as a forum for public discussion and at the same
