COVER

THE COOK HOME, the first place winner in the residential category of Masonry Magazine's 1995 Excellence in Masonry Awards, is located in Colorado. Despite the poor weather conditions, Mountain States Masonry, of Aspen, Colorado, managed to complete this home in just over a year, and achieve the precise look the owners were looking for. The exterior design, Flagstone and Buff Strip Stone were used to incorporate Aspen landscape to the home's design. A large hot tub, set in Buff Flagstone, overlooks the ski runs of Snowmass. The home is 7200 square feet, including the exterior of 12,000 square feet of Loveland Buff Strip Stone, all "pillow-faced" and hand cut. Round windows were keystoned with Buff Strip Stone in a circular design to produce a unique framed design. Much of the detailing was done on-the-job extemporaneously by Mountain States Masonry. The brick used in the living room fireplace were set in a matched herringbone pattern which offsets the buff strip stone. The home incorporated arches and circles throughout, each executed, adding a soft yet formal feel to the home's ambience. The porte cochere is built entirely of 24" x 30" blocks of stone hand-carved. This grand entry leads to the doorway which was also carefully constructed in a framed arch design. The architect is Mark Ward of Mark Ward & Associates of Boulder, Colorado, and the principal masonry supplier is Loukonen Brothers Stone of Lyons, Colorado.
