PAULA COLLINS says she "feels" her art. "Instead of thinking about the carving, I found myself thinking about how Mary and Joseph must have felt when they couldn't find Jesus," she said in regard to her method of approach on a particular commission for the St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Sugarland, Texas. The sculpting process is more than a "feeling," it also uses technology as well as art. Collins works directly with Acme Brick to achieve her art.

MY INTEREST in brick and brick sculpture was inspired by my first visit to a brick manufacturing plant (Summit Brick & Tile). At the time (1967) I was a college student majoring in the fine arts with an emphasis in ceramics. I was impressed by the range of color and the richness of clay bodies used in making brick. Because of the modular nature of brick, I became aware of the potential to build large ceramic sculptures from brick units. Later, in 1985, the Japanese ceramics trade publication "The KUNISHIRO" recognized me as a "Great Master of the Brick Sculpture."

SPOFFORTH HAD TWENTY year experience in masonry construction as a bricklayer before working as an environmental independent sculptor for the past twenty-six years. Also included in his brick medium is carved green brick and clay, and hand-painted bisqued ceramic tile for "border work". Currently Spofforth is working on a book including his past projects and awards. This book is to be used by bricklay/artists and may possibly receive funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, and private granting foundations that support the building trades and industry, experimental and new uses for brick, and connection between bricklaying and art. The NEA and Ohio Arts Council awarded Spofforth twelve artist's fellowship grants, purchase commissions, and project grants for "having transformed the common materials of brick and mortar into an esthetic medium."
