grams.
Third, MCAA is also developing foreman training programs to promote ongoing managerial and leadership training.
All of these efforts, from recruitment to ongoing training are being designed to increase the skills of the mason. Producing better products will increase the industry's ability to compete. Not only will we regain some of the markets we have lost but masonry will become the builder's first choice.
Is MCAA working to give the open shop contractor an advantage over the union contractor? The answer is a resounding "No!" MCAA is looking beyond the union vs. open shop issue. We are attempting to give the masonry industry an advantage over our competition.
We want to regain the markets we lost. We want to make sure that there is a well-trained workforce available to meet the increasing demand for masonry work.
Will MCAA physically operate training schools? Again, the answer is a resounding "No!" With a staff of eight people and a budget of roughly $1,000,000, we are neither interested in nor capable of building and staffing training centers.
Instead, MCAA will develop the standards to be used for training and recruiting and then promote both through whatever local vehicles exist.
As is human nature, when things go wrong, we look for someone to blame. Many union supporters are blaming the MCAA for many of the union's internal problems. However, MCAA board members who voted to develop these recruitment and training programs are union contractors. The overwhelming majority of the MCAA board is union ...so why would they vote to start programs that will help the open shop contractor over the union contractor? Why would our union board members spend money on programs that will put them out of business? The answer is that they wouldn't!
Unfortunately, a healthy economy has once again masked many of our industry's problems. Everyone is working so we are happy for the moment. But the problems that were uncovered by the study still exist. MCAA's goal is to address these problems so that all contractors, both union and open shop can prosper.

Klingner said.
John Melander, PCA, provided some results from the 1994 University Professsor's Masonry Workshop Survey. The 47 responses (of 146 surveyed) included 36 universities, seven four-year colleges, two community colleges and two other learning institutions. Melander termed the response rate "fairly good."
Only three had no masonry-related courses. Thirty-four percent offered courses solely dedicated to masonry. At 58 schools, masonry was part of a required course. It was part of an elective course at 23.
Dr. Gary Hart, professor of civil engineering at UCLA, reported on strength design under the 1994 Uniform Building Code.
