A day joint meeting between NCMA officers and the Portland Cement Association (PCA) resulted in agreement to fund a $50,000 public relations effort at the National Association of Home Builders convention in Houston, where the all concrete masonry "Back-to-Basics" home was showcased. The effort resulted in several thousand builders visiting the home, which eventually sold for $650,000 after being put on the market for three days. There was considerable publication in Professional Builder Magazine, read by nearly 150,000 builders. In addition, a presentation by Gary Bumpass, the builder, added a great deal of impact.

Oberfield noted that NCMA is helping to fund an effort with MCAA to determine the number of working masons and masons in training in the U.S. In addition, NCMA, MCAA, PCA, and Brick Institute of America will fund the hiring of a training specialist by MCAA. Oberfield said the $30,000 NCMA is using to fund these efforts result from the 1994 fall optional ballot, and encouraged more members to participate in future balloting efforts.

The optional program was established in 1992 and resulted in a 50% dues reduction for NCMA members. Oberfield noted that NCMA currently represents 245 of the estimated 800 manufacturers in the nation, and said the association's goal is to reach at least 50%. He urged every member to recruit at least one new member so the goal can be reached.

A NEW BEGINNING

Continued from Page 17 the future. Building a stronger association, closer cooperation with allied associations and working towards a more competitive and prosperous future are the keys to MCAA's successful future, or "A New Beginning." MCAA membership is growing at a healthy eight percent rate and is expected to peak at about eighteen percent during the coming year. The bright outlook was announced at the Annual Meeting of MCAA conducted Monday morning February 6 at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Thomas Joseph, reporting for the Membership Committee, said 78 new members have joined MCAA during the past year, including 10 so far during the current Expo. Joseph also announced that Springfield, Illinois and the Quad Cities region in Iowa are the two newest MCAA chapters. "We expect several more chapters to join around the country before the end of the year," he said. "Our membership renewals are running at a rate of 95 percent with only a handful still out there who haven't signed up yet."

Finance Committee Chairman Michael Johnson reported that the 1995-1996 budget is "approaching a $1-million operation." He noted there will be positive and negative financial developments during the coming year. He explained that a $40,000 projected gain will turn out to be a $60,000 projected loss due to various litigations the association has undertaken. "We expect that deficit to change rapidly," he said. "We can already see the light at the end of the litigation tunnel. We're hoping to be able to report a healthy gain for 1995-96."

President Lenny Pardue closed the crisply-run meeting by announcing that the Fall meeting in mid-October will be held in Palm Desert, California and next year's Expo will be held in New Orleans in late January.
