Imaginative
Designing With
Glass Block
A pair of International Excellence in Masonry Award winners exemplify outstanding, imaginative use of glass block in diverse applications -- one a neighborhood car wash, the other an upscale residence.
GLASS BLOCK can add beauty and practicality to any building, and combined with masonry, only adds to the overall effect. Both the Brooks residence and the Bloomfield auto wash are examples of this.
Whether it is a simple porthole or a long serpentine wall, glass block provides a window to an alternative building material. In both instances, glass block suggests the architects take a fun-loving look at their respective projects.
The Brooks home owners and the architect, Kenneth Neuman of Joel Smith & Associates, seem to have a great love and understanding for seafaring vessels, while Todd Young of Young & Young Architects, displayed BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Michigan, auto wash, below, presents dramatic day and night contrasts, made possible by extensive use of glass block and interior lighting.
