Free Job Corps
JOB CORPS now offers a hassle-free 800 number for employers to use to gain immediate access to a cost-free job placement service. Employers of construction and building trades will now find it more convenient to select from a pool of pre-screened, qualified entry-level employees on demand. Employers who use the service are offered a tax credit by the federal government.
Advanced training programs are operated by various labor unions and the Home Builders Institute. Such programs include bricklayer apprentice, cement mason apprentice and plasterer apprentice.

Call For Entries
MASONRY MAGAZINE has announced its call for entries for the 1996 International Excellence in Masonry Awards. This year, a new format for judging requires architects and masonry contractors to do the judging before Masonry Expo '96 opens. Winners will be announced the second day of the convention at an awards breakfast.
The last day to declare intent to participate in the Excellence in Masonry awards competition is November 15, 1995. All materials must be in by the 15th of December. So start choosing projects, that are examples of outstanding accomplishments in masonry design and construction.
Previously awards were presented to projects which won by popular vote, voted on by Masonry Expo attendees.
Excellence in Masonry Awards, designed by award winning sculptress, Donna Dobberfuhl, and cast in solid bronze will be presented at an awards breakfast in New Orleans on Sunday, January 28, Masonry Expo '96.
The program has shifted from an emphasis solely on aesthetics to an emphasis on aesthetics and technical achievement. Execution of design and attention to detail will be stressed.

Student Sidewalk Superintendents
STUDENTS AT THE COMMUNITY School in Ladue, Missouri are learning about construction first-hand, thanks to R. G. Brinkmann Construction Company, Chesterfield, Missouri, which is building a $2.1-million addition and free-standing early childhood center as 257 children attend classes at the pre-kindergarten through sixth grade school. "Because the school is occupied by children and staff during construction, safety is paramount," said Tim Williams, Brinkmann project manager. "We're also trying to have as much interaction as possible with the children to give them the opportunity to learn about construction." Brinkmann workers have visited classes to explain the project to students. In addition, a temporary wall with windows has been erected between the main building and the addition so children can safely take the "sidewalk superintendent" role.
