How To Build One

Literature available on masonry heater design, in the English language, is scant. Most drawings and detailed design information comes from Europe. However two books which provide a good starting place are David Lyle's The Book of Masonry Stoves and Albie Barden and Heikki Hyytiainen's Finnish Fireplaces-Heart of the Home. A listing of articles and other publications relating to masonry heaters is also available from the MHA. Most masonry heater masons have learned the details of design through many hours of study and informal apprenticeships and workshops. Another alternative for the mason interested in building heaters is to contact a manufacturer of masonry heater kits or units. Manufacturers typically provide training to qualified individuals for installation of their products.

THE COST OF A MASONRY HEATER

THE COST OF A MASONRY HEATER varies depending on the design, the extent of decorative masonry, the type of heater, materials used and of course, geographic location. MHA member Jerry Frisch, with Lopez Quarries in Everett, Washington, provides this comparison based on material and labor prices in the Pacific Northwest.

| | Average Cost | Construction Time |
|---|---|---|
| Masonry Fireplace | $2,500-$3,000 | 2 days |
| Low-End Masonry Heater | $6,500-$7,000 | 3 to 5 days |
| Average Masonry Heater | $7,500-$8,500 | 3 to 5 days |
| Special/Decorative Heater (may include a bake oven) | $10,000 or more | 3 to 5 days or more |
| Prefabricated Masonry | $3,000-$5,000 | 1 day |
| Heater Core Only | **does not include cost of finishing outside of heater | |

Form Landscape Products Group

THE NATIONAL Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) has announced formation of a Landscape Products Group, uniting under one umbrella the Concrete Paver Institute, NCMA's segmental retaining wall committee and efforts on erosion control products, fencing and sound barriers.

Formation of the new group came in recognition of the fact that many of the end users of pavers and segmental retaining wall units fall into different market segments than the users of traditional mortared block systems.

Formation of the Landscape Products Group as a divison of NCMA was approved by NCMA's board at their mid-year meeting, after a five-month study by the Concrete Paver Institute and its committees, along with NCMA's retaining wall committee.
