International Excellence
In Masonry
Award Winners

CONGRATULATIONS to the Masonry Magazine's International Excellence in Masonry Award Program. Due to the change in judging format, a more accurate example of excellence can be awarded.

This program was started in 1994 to recognize, on an international scale, the mason contractors, architects, and engineers for outstanding accomplishments in masonry design and construction. To the building of masonry projects that give testimony to the quality and grandeur of masonry, and also serves to spotlight the masonry industry and its exciting tradition as architectural material.

To include as many projects as possible, this year's competition allowed projects not previously presented a regional award, to enter. In the past, only projects recognized by a local community or state competition were entitled to submit entries.

For the first time, a Paver/Retaining Wall/Landscape category was included. Masonry is using this category to recognize segmental contractors and their exceptional work.

Extensive revamping of the judging process was another part of the Excellence in Masonry makeover. In previous years, the winners were voted on by attendees of Masonry Expo. On the last day of Expo, ballots were counted, then winners, were presented awards. This year, judging took place before Masonry Expo with a panel of impartial judges. The panel consisted of a mason contractor, an engineer, and an architect. This format allows each project to be judged on credentials not previously considered. This year, as with all previous years, workmanship and detail in masonry were factors considered by judges. The winners of the Excellence Awards are as follows:

1st place Rehab/Restoration is Stratford North Medical Center, located outside of Chicago, Illinois; Anderson, Mikos Architects, Ltd. is the architect, and the masonry supplier is Brady Brick & Supply.
