Boston Hoskins Scott & Partners Inc. (HS&P), an architecture, interior design & planning firm, was awarded two New England Region 1996 International Masonry Institute Golden Trowel Awards for "Outstanding achievement in architectural design, construction and craftsmanship in masonry". The Exeter Street Theater, a 110 year old historically significant building in Boston's Back Bay, received First Place in the Restoration Category. The building was ravaged by fire in August of 1995, and has been completely restored. The work included repair of all fire and water damage, structural enhancements to the original wood trusses, a new slate and copper roof and new finishes throughout. Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger was both Restoration Engineer and Structural Engineer for the project.
The Construction Specifications Institute recently honored John Speweik, GenLime Group, LP, Genoa, Ohio, with the 1996 National Technical Commendation Award for his new book on the "History of Masonry Mortar in America, 1720 1995". The award was presented to Mr. Speweik at CSI's annual conference and expo held from June 27-30, 1996 in Denver, Colorado. Mr. Speweik is a stone mason, and was nominated for this award by five CSI Chapters from around the country, and upon a vote by the CSI Executive Committee, was chosen to receive this honor. The CSI Technical Commendation is awarded to an individual, chapter, firm or organization that has made a significant contribution to the technical program of CSI. This 20-page, 8-1/2" x 11 book reviews the development and ingredients of masonry mortars in the United States over the last 275 years. It defines hydraulic lime, roman cement, artificial hydraulic lime, portland cement, etc. Other topics include methods of production (mixing mortar, mortar mixing machines, mortar admixtures, silo mortar systems), ASTM specification standards (masonry cement, mortar type designations, ready mixed and ready to use mortars, and mortar cement), along with photographs, tables and drawings. The "History of Masonry Mortar in America, 1720-1995" is an excellent documentation of the history of this important building material, and should be part of every mortar-related library of reference materials. It is written in an informal style and is enjoyable reading. To order, contact the National Lime Association, 200 N. Glebe Road, Suite 800, Arlington, VA 22203 (ph: 703-243-5463; fax: 703-243-5489).
