Leadership
Continued from puge 7
Virginia, Corpus Christi, Texas and South Carolina. I applaud those contractors who have become active in training and who have begun to establish programs in their area. Our commitment as a national association is to continue in this effort and work tirelessly to insure that our future work force will be sufficient for masonry to not only maintain what market share that we have but to expand our markets as well.
Recruitment Kit Gains Acceptance
Just training new masons is not the whole solution. We need to find those new masons as well. To help accomplish this task of finding our industry's future workforce, MCAA developed our "Check Out A Career In Masonry" kit which has really gained acceptance in our industry. In fact over 300 kits are currently being used by contractors and local promotion groups to educate young people on careers in the masonry industry.
Masonry Career Day Planned
Even with the success of our recruitment kit, not enough has been done to get the entire masonry industry involved in recruiting young people into the masonry industry. Getting the attention of young people is the key to recruiting and as an industry we have not done this. In fact, the masonry industry has never achieved a program of such magnitude as the MCAA Masonry Career Day which we are planning for the end of February. You should have already received information regarding conducting a Masonry Day in your local high school. We strongly urge all of you to conduct a Career Day together with your block supplier, brick dealer and local promotion representative on February 28.
Marketing & Business Planning Manuals Published
Introduced at last year's Masonry Expo, MCAA published two new manuals to help mason contractors more effectively run their business. These two fine books compliment all of the publications that we have available to help mason contractors in every aspect of their business operation.
Greater Involvement In The Legislative Process
MCAA literally doubled our involvement in the legislative process. MCAA staff travel each month to Washington to meet with the legislative staff of seven construction associations. In these meetings, key legislative issues are identified and jointly we work to affect legislation that will help contractors run their business. Key issues such as OSHA Reform, tax relief and regulatory reform have been in the forefront of those issues that we fight for on behalf of all mason contractors. As part of MCAA's greater involvement, we have forged closer working ties with key members of congress. During the past year, members of the MCAA met with key congressional representatives such as Majority Leader Dick Armey, Majority Whip Dennis Hastert, Chairman of the Labor Worker Protection Committee Cass Ballenger and House Appropriations Chairman Bob Livingston. MCAA's efforts in the legislative process is extremely important and must continue to expand in the future.
