LITERATURE REVIEW
Thermal mass research heats up the energy debate
The development of R-values for insulating buildings, a result of the energy crisis of the '70s, has been found over the years to be inappropriate to concrete and masonry construction, due to the effects of thermal mass. This concept, which describes how massive walls absorb, retain and later release heat, is the subject of recent research by Construction Technology Laboratories. Their studies of heat absorption and energy consumption in concrete and other high-mass building materials, and the role that thermal mass can play in building design, are described in an information bulletin entitled Thermal Mass-The Energy Saver In Concrete and Masonry Buildings (EV12). Published by the Environmental Council of Concrete Organizations, the information sheet goes on to describe the energy-saving benefits of this process, as well as the impact of thermal mass research on the evolution of energy conservation standards. For information on receiving this and other ECCO materials, please call 1-800-994- ECCO, or write to ECCO, 5420 Old Orchard Rd., Skokie, IL 60077, FAX 847-966-8389. The Environmental Council of Concrete Organizations is a coalition of companies, organizations, and individuals affiliated with the concrete industry. Together, they are committed to developing and disseminating information on the environmental benefits of concrete and concrete products.
New Concrete Cutting Chainsaw Brochure
A new brochure for the Stanley DS 11 Concrete Cutting Chainsaw is now available from Stanley Hydraulic Tools of Milwaukie, Oregon. Featuring a chain with diamond segments welded to it, the hydraulic powered DSI I will cut concrete (either wire or rebar reinforced), brick, concrete block, masonry and stone. For use in the construction industry, the DS11 will cut square corners for openings and wall cut-outs. It will plunge cut into walls and make full depth cuts at one pass. Other applications for this unique saw include remodeling, demolition, maintenance and rescue. Because of the light weight, compact size and maneuverability of the DSI I, work in confined areas or on uneven surfaces is much easier to accomplish. For a copy of the new Stanley DS 11 Concrete Cutting Chainsaw brochure or for more information, contact Stanley Hydraulic Tools, 3810 S.E. Naef Road, Milwaukie, OR 97267-5698, Ph. 503-659-5660, Fx. 503-652- 1780.
