Figure 2. As you can see, there are many issues the "competent person" needs to know about wood scaffold plank. From identifying a wood board as "Scaffold Grade", to implementing an in-house procedure for plank inspection, the "competent person" must be properly trained and given the authority to enforce safe practices. All wood scaffold plank must be strong enough to support intended loads per O.S.H.A.'s deflection criteria, be installed correctly, and be properly maintained. The Scaffold Industry Association (SIA) (Ref. 1), American National Standards Institute (ANSI) (Ref.2), and O.S.H.A. (Ref. 3) have published guidelines to help mason contractors minimize exposure to liability and avoid accidents. Be wise, and send your appointed "competent person" to a safety training course and post the above resources for all your employees to study. Most importantly, invest only in scaffold grade plank and take care of it like all your scaffold equipment. After all, a scaffold system is only as effective as the sum of its components.
