tar, cavity wall construction, corners, basic blueprints and estimating. In addition, Mr. Davis covers work ethics, pride in one's work, staying on task and responsibility. Mr. Davis feels, "The vocational school has become a necessary part of our society because it fills a gap created by the student who hasn't the means or desire to enter college. This type of school affords an opportunity for these students to get practical knowledge of a skilled trade as well as academic classes."
Fennimore, Wisconsin
The Bricklaying and Masonry Program at the Southwest Wisconsin Technical College was started in 1997 because of the need for trained bricklayers in southern Wisconsin. Area contractors and the Brick Distributors of Wisconsin are very supportive of the program, donating materials and offering scholarships to students. Enrollment has been at the maximum of 16 students every year and 75% of their graduates are currently employed as a bricklayer.
In addition to their classroom training, students at the college build permanent projects throughout the local area. In the last two years, they have built concession stands and toilet facilities for ballparks and built a large garage for the Auto Body Department of the college. According to Mark Graf, Instructor at the college, "The students' skills grow fast on these types of projects. We treat it like a job situation, working full days and staying
