Standards Joint Committee that develops and publishes the Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures (ACI 530/ASCE 5/TMS 402) and the Specifications for Masonry Structures (ACI 530.1/ASCE 6/TMS 602). These documents have been adopted by two of the three model building codes and are referenced by the new International Building Code. TMS has also partnered with ACI to produce the Standard Method for Determining Fire Resistance of Concrete and Masonry Construction (ACI 216.1/TMS 0216). Our committees have also recently completed a standard for determining Sound Transmission Class Ratings for Masonry Walls, and it is expected to be printed late this fall once public balloting is complete.
Seminars, Workshops, and other Educational Programs. TMS provides a variety of educational opportunities on design, specification, construction, preservation and inspection of masonry. These seminars, workshops, conferences and events are very popular and highly regarded because they are developed with the input of our broad membership me base.
Many of our seminars are conducted in co-operation with local and national masonry promotion groups so that we can assist them with education of the masonry design and construction community.
Publications. TMS publishes a variety of technical books on masonry design, architecture, and construction, including design aids, documents on specific aspects of masonry, code commentaries, course notes, and conference proceedings. The development of these documents is strictly controlled to ensure accuracy, non-bias, and usefulness. Because of this rigor in preparing publications, TMS publications are highly regarded. This is very important in the development of design guides and commentaries since, while these publications are not mandatory, they can significantly influence how masonry is designed and constructed. Because of the work
"TMS serves a critical educational role for the masonry community, and acts as a forum for discussion, consideration and often, resolution."
TMS has done in this area in the past on Commentaries to the Uniform Building Code, TMS was asked earlier this year to develop a commentary to the masonry provisions of the International Building Code (IBC). Over 20 volunteers contributed to the development of this commentary on a fast-track schedule, and the resulting commentary was enthusiastically received by the International Code Council. And it will serve the entire masonry community by providing insight into the IBC provisions, which will be new for all of us.
