OPPORTUNITIES
Flexibility in management plans and mobility among the workers are key features of an effective human resource planning strategy.
There are many opportunities to start the industry on the rebuilding path. Investments required to revitalize the existing systems will be supported by both federal and provincial governments who recognize their stake in the outcome. To rebuild the work force, the industry can turn to non-traditional groups like women and native people. Many groups are active in opening the way and preparing new construction workers from these groups. Current market conditions will encourage these pioneers and the masonry industry can benefit. There are economies of scale in the training and certification systems and industry promotion that is required. These can be realized by initiatives that bring together several provinces and training institutions or gain leverage from programs established in the United States. Joint ventures with suppliers, designers and academic engineers and architects to rebuild market share are perhaps the most important of these. Participants in the study often described new products and materials (e.g. cellular blocks) that are natural extensions for the trade and have promise in the market. Work has already begun in several areas that can lead the way.
