Masonry-Institute of St. Louis Architectural Design Program Winners Announced

The Masonry Institute of St. Louis (MISL) has announced the winners of its triennial Excellence in Masonry Awards, a juried design program for architects, that is one of the largest of its type in the country. The winners were announced Saturday night, October 7th at a gala awards event held at the America's Center.

In the Commercial/Industrial/Institutional category, an Excellence Award - the highest recognition-was presented for the St. Gerard Majella Parish Center's new Main Hall, a Holden Architects design. A Merit Award was given for Maryville University's new Art & Design Building, Christener Inc. project. In addition to the awards, Honorable Mentions were presented for the Brooks Fiber Optics Headquarters building, a Tuck Hinton design, and for the St. Louis Public Schools' Stix Early Learning Childhood Center, Mackey Mitchell Associates, architect.

In the Single Family Residential category, a residence for Mr. and Mrs. Greg Zavaglia (Dick Busch Architect) received a Merit Award. Honorable Mentions were given for a residence for Ron and Janice Ohmes (Orine-Lepique Architects), and for a residence for Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Jones (Gerst Krejci Architects).

In the Rehabilitation/Restoration/Addition category the Anheuser Busch Seismic Mitigation project (Washington Group International, architect) received a Merit Award. An Honorable Mention was given for St. Louis University's Queen's Daughter Mansion Restoration (Cannon Architects and Engineers).

In the Architectural Features category, the St. Albans Construction Barrel Arch Entryway (Glantz Associates Architects) received an Honorable Mention.

This year's competition also featured a Craftsmanship Division to recognize the high degree of skill shown by area masons, members of Bricklayers Union Local No. 1 of Missouri.

In the Commercial/Industrial/Institutional category of the Craftsmanship Division, an Excellence Award was presented to Paul Gettinger of Leonard Masonry for the Manchester United Methodist Church. Merit Awards were given to David Tarter of John J. Smith Masonry for the Washington University Brown Hall Expansion and to Mike Prothman of Leonard Masonry for the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints Temple. Honorable Mentions were given to Leonard "Red" Doorack of L&L Contracting Company for the Boone Valley Golf Club; Gary Ritter of John J. Smith Masonry for Olson Hall on the Mary Institute St. Louis Country Day campus; and Danny Krysl of JDS Masonry for the Delta Dental Insurance Office Building.

In the Single Family Residential category of the Craftsmanship Division, an Excellence Award was presented to Mike Gilbert of Spencer Brickwork for a residence for Mr. and Mrs. Greg Zavaglia. Mike Orlando of Frisch Masonry received two Merit Awards for residences for Mr. and Mrs. James Mills and, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Jones. An Honorable Mention was given to Mike Gilbert of Spencer Brickwork for a residence at #25 Somerset Downs.

In the Rehabilitation/Restoration/Addition category of the Craftsmanship Division, Torn Carroll and Brad Kasten of Leonard Masonry received an Excellence Award for the Washington University Graham Chapel Renovation. Charles Morgan, Sr., of the Superior Waterproofing and Restoration Company also was presented an Excellence Award for the Arsenal Missouri State Hospital. Merit Awards were given to Michael Jahnsen of Heitkamp Masonry for an addition to a residence for Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pottebaum, and to Stan McCall and Mike Diemert of F. Daues Contracting for the Anheuser Busch Brewhouse Seismic Mitigation project.

In the Architectural Features category of the Craftmanship Division, Charles Robinson of Heitkamp Masonry received an Excellence Award for the Franciscan Sisters of Mary's Almost Home. David Spencer Brickwork received a Merit Award for the St. Albans Construction Barrel Arch Entryway.
