How did you get into the contracting business?
This is a family business started by my parents. My brother and I run the Minnesota operations, and my parents run the home office in Wisconsin. Over the years my parents also have had various relatives in the business.

I became a member of the MCAA because...
My mother and father started this business more than twenty-five years ago. Joining the MCAA was one of the very first things they did. They looked at joining and being active in a National Trade Association as a great opportunity. For one thing, it was and is an unending source of information pertinent and specific to the masonry industry. Then too, there are many industry problems which can not be addressed locally. They can only be solved at the national level. We belong to, and are very active in the local Mason Contractors Association in both Milwaukee and Minneapolis/St. Paul. But there is something special about the MCAA, where you get to associate with other mason contractors who are not in direct competition with you. These mason contractors have always been more willing to share information and we with them. We have always found this to be a great benefit.

I find the thing I like most about the MCAA now is ...
The things I like best about the MCAA have not really changed, but they have intensified. Years ago an ambitious bricklayer could buy a pickup truck and some basic tools, and become a mason contractor. But each year this becomes more and more difficult. Today you need to wear so many hats and be part attorney, part accountant, part chemist and so on. Having a resource like the MCAA available to you when addressing these problems is not really an option, it's a necessity.
