Cover Story/continued from page 21 paint was probably applied on this 1880's Red Lake Superior Sandstone to cover the soot black appearance from turn-of-the-century coal burning pollution.

Many buildings are painted to hide the dirt to so-called "improve its look." Once this paint cycle is started, within a few years peeling results; now you have the every ten years or so of re-painting.

As Chico's went out of business for lack of customers, the new owner decided to attract a cosmopolitan clientele with the exterior appearance of his new restaurant, Elsa's on the Park. After meeting with the owner and Diedrich Technologies, the architect requested a test sample patch demonstration. It was determined to have the lead-based paint removed with Diedrich's multi-layer paint remover. The alkaline stripper was left on overnight to digest through approximately twenty layers of paint that was pressure-washed off, contained and collected, meeting health department and DNR guidelines. The unsightly carbon underneath the paint was then cleaned with masonry restorer to reveal and enhance the original architectural grandeur of this building's facade. While New York has brownstone buildings that look similar, Red Lake Superior Sandstone has a pleasing pinkish cast to it. This commercial building is the last remaining example of this style of architectural sandstone left in the city of Milwaukee.

By the way, not only was the building saved and restored by a conscientious owner and architect, but the restaurant is thriving strongly.
