I consider myself a fairly confident person. Ability, skill and intellect-wise, I hold my own... and people often tell me I communicate well. Physically, I don't think I'm grotesquely ugly (measured according to how many small children run screaming away when they see me) and I seldom back down in arguments when I know I'm right... and sometimes, I don't even need to know that much. My demeanor is collected, my blood pressure still three digits over two, and my truck almost paid off. In all, confidence is good.

And I'm guessing your confidence level is about the same... and why not? After all, you are good at what you do; you have developed your skills, paid your dues and built your business; and you deliver good service. But still there's a problem; the same problem. You need more work to keep things afloat and you know from experience that gaining more opportunities to bid via some sort of marketing program is logical course.

But here's how confidence comes in. If you and I are so committed and cocksure in our beliefs and abilities, why do we then bolt like flaming rabbits (flaming rabbits?? Geeeeeeeezzz...) when we alone conjure up truly unique - yet untried (let's say) marketing approaches for our services or products... only to immediately talk ourselves out of it because (and say it with me): NO ONE ELSE IS DOING IT.

Admit it.. you've done it. Our tainted rationalization always seems to go something like: "well, if Monstrous Masonry, Inc down the street isn't doing it, it can't be a good idea... right?" "I mean they're huge!! They actually have a marketing department... and people who do it for a living!" "There's got to be something I don't see."

So why are we wired like this? Why do we doubt our intuition? Why do we march assuredly through our daily business travails with poise and assuredness... and then doubt ourselves when it comes to marketing IN OUR OWN FIELD? Well, after exhaustive research, I believe I've narrowed down I didn't do any research actually... I was out late last night and I'm really exhausted.
