STANDARD 2-WIRE
Produced by 2 of 3 manufacturers
The Engineered Wood Specialists!
10-Lengths
16 lap required for core clearance
Advantages: CMU core clearance
Disadvantages: Difficult to lap and meet standard
Heavy and bulky bundles are difficult to lift
Additional shipping and storage space required
Difficult to meet CMU heights
Detracts from bricklayer productivity
Presently, two out of three manufacturers' produce standard 10-8" length wire with cross rods spaced 16" o.c. starting 8" off each end (Figure A). The third produces 16" o.c. wire by special order only. They continue to produce the majority of their wire 10'-0" under the old standard with cross rods spaced 15" o.c. This is unfortunate because 15" o.c. makes it impossible for the mason to line up the cross rods on the webs of the CMU, again, making it difficult to ensure vertical core clearance for rebar and grout installation. Masonry Reinforcing Corporation of America (MRCA) should be applauded for the giant leap they took in the win.
Figure B
STANDARD 2-WIRE (Proposed)
10- Langths
16 lap requined for core clearance
Advantages: Optimum CMU core clearance
Simple to lap and meet standards
Lighter (approx. 4%) and less bulky (8") bundles
Requires less shipping and storage space
Lowers production costs by eliminating one cross rod and two welds
Improves bricklayer productivity by simplifying wire installation/laps
Makes masonry more competitive
Disadvantages: None
