Industry Strategies
Human Resources Development Project moves to Phase II
The urgent need to rebuild the masonry work force is growing as we write this article. The national study on the masonry trade "Canadians Building Canada; Performance Through Partnership" is a vision for a stronger masonry industry and a blueprint for our success.
The primary objective of this project was the creation of the Canadian Masonry Human Resources Committee (CMHRC), which, would undertake and oversee a number of specific projects to address and/or analyze human resources issues affecting the industry.
CMHRC mandate for phase II of the project is:
1. Establish and improve relationships/linkages with academic groups to promote design in masonry,
2. Carry out a detailed review and analysis of apprenticeship training in Canada for the masonry trades:
3. Undertake a review of the current Bricklayer National Occupational Analysis (NOA) and determine the need to develop a National Core Curriculum;
4. Research availability of refractory training across Canada and assess requirements for enhancements and/or updating
5. Carry out a review and evaluation of Occupational Health and Safety Training for masonry trades in Canada;
6. Undertake a review of current industry health and safety conditions for masonry trades in all provinces and develop a strategy for making appropriate improvements:
7. Develop a strategy to promote certification and mobility for masonry trades across Canada:
8. Develop a strategy to address shortages of supervisory personnel,
9. Develop a strategy/plan to increase the number of certified new entrants to the masonry labour force;
10. Develop a strategy and implementation plan to seek provincial support for expanding certification in the masonry trades;
11. Develop a recruiting strategy for designated groups/visible minorities;
12. Review management training programs available in other industries across Canada and develop a national competency program for masonry contractors;
13. Develop a communication strategy designed to establish and improve linkages/relationships with provinces and their respective masonry Provincial/Trade Advisory Committees (PAC/TACs).
The partners in this project: the Canadian Masonry Contractors' Association and the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers are pleased to announce the consultants for Phase II, Prism Economics and Anlaysis. Prism Economics and Analysis is a consulting firm located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada that have expertise in labour/human resources, international trade and industrial economic analysis. Much of the firm's work is carried out for joint labour-management committees, industry associations, government ministries, and agencies.
The work of this new committee should prove both challenging and rewarding and should provide positive benefits to our contractor members across Canada.
