Training Issues
# New supervisor program
Keeping up on the latest technical and professional information, from new building products to personnel management, is critical in this economy. These topics and many more were covered at the annual Instructor Certification Program (ICP) of the International Masonry Institute, a joint labor/management effort of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) and the contractors who employ its members.
IMI launched a new program for the critical link between craftworker and contractor-the supervisor. The Supervisor Certification Program (SCP) offers two tiers of training: foreman and superintendent. Both levels offer national certification.
After debuting at ICP as a "post graduate" course, the Supervisor Certification training will be offered throughout the IMI/BAC training system nationwide. The supervisor program requires 32 hours of study, while superintendent training requires 32 additional hours.
For dates, times and places for future programs, call (800) JOBS-IMI.
# Training seminars in Wisconsin
The University of Wisconsin-Madison will be offering several courses in 2003 that should appeal to mason contractors in the area.
On January 28-29, the Department of Engineering Professional Development will offer Masonry Design and Construction-How to Avoid and Solve Masonry Problems. The course will help attendees learn how to select a masonry system, explore effective details, learn maintenance and repair procedures, and review masonry regulations while exploring solutions to masonry problems. There will also be a masonry demonstration, primarily aimed at architects, engineers, contractors and owners.
Structural Design of Masonry Systems will be January 30-31 at the Madison, Wis, campus. Attendees will examine changes to ACI 530-99/ASCE-5-99 Masonry Building Code Requirements, the International Building Code 2000, sheer wall design of masonry for lateral load resistance, structural connections details, and foundations and retaining wall structures.
For registration and course information, contact the University at (800) 462-0876.
