The 2004 Manufactured Concrete Products Exposition (MCPX) will be held at the Georgia World Congress Center, Feb. 6-8, 2004. This event is jointly offered by the National Concrete Masonry Association, National Precast Concrete Association, Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute, and American Concrete Pipe Association.

As rescue workers begin clearing the rubble caused by the earthquake in Paso Robles, one thing has become clear. The clock tower that collapsed, killing two women, was not reinforced to withstand earthquakes.
In Sonoma's Unreinforced Masonry Building Upgrading Program status report dated Dec. 23, Wayne Wirick Jr., the city's developmental services director, writes that nearly all of the privately owned masonry buildings in the city have been upgraded.
In 1990, Sonoma adopted an ordinance making mandatory the reinforcement or demolition of masonry buildings. The ordinance was passed in response to Senate Bill 547, also known as the Unreinforced Masonry Building law. The law, enacted in 1986, gave great leeway to cities and counties in how they handled the older, seismically unsound buildings. The city took a more hard-line stance, requiring retrofit or demolition of the older masonry buildings.
To date, nine buildings have yet to be modernized. Four of the nine belong to the state of California, and while the city has notified the state that the buildings are potentially hazardous, the state has not yet upgraded them.

Faced with overcrowding classrooms, Lee County has agreed to purchase two vacant Kmart stores and convert them into schools.
Updating the empty Kmarts into functioning schools will only be slightly less expensive than building new schools, officials said, but because the building shell and roof are already in place they will be able to open sooner.
