Retaining Walls are Reaching New Heights with Consumers

Retaining walls are no longer strictly utilitarian structures. Today's homeowners are using them to add beauty and value to their properties. As a result, retaining wall construction is booming. According to industry experts, the market for segmental retaining walls (SRWs) is growing at a rate of 10 to 15 percent annually.

"Homeowners are looking for ways to improve their outdoor living spaces," says Bob Brown, president of the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA). "Retaining walls can be used to create patios, terraces, and other outdoor features. They can also be used to add privacy and security to a property."

SRWs are made from concrete blocks that are dry-stacked and interlocked. They are easy to install and require no special tools or equipment. SRWs are also very durable and can withstand the elements.

"SRWs are a great option for homeowners who want to build a retaining wall themselves," says Brown. "They are relatively easy to install and require no special skills."

However, Brown cautions that homeowners should always consult with a qualified engineer or contractor before building a retaining wall. "Retaining walls can be complex structures," he says. "It is important to make sure that the wall is properly designed and installed to prevent failure."

Here are some tips for building a retaining wall:

* Consult with a qualified engineer or contractor.
* Choose the right type of retaining wall for your needs.
* Prepare the site properly.
* Install the retaining wall according to the manufacturer's instructions.
* Backfill the retaining wall with proper drainage.
* Maintain the retaining wall regularly.

By following these tips, you can build a retaining wall that will add beauty and value to your property for years to come.
