state and national high school masonry titles, and Cody Alward, who is a state and national high school masonry champion and who won the N.C. Department of Labor State Fair Masonry Apprentice Contest in 2002. Several of the other contestants previously placed well in various apprentice contests, including Salas himself, who finished the 2003 NCMCA contest in fourth place.

Hartsell, the second-place finisher, actually tied Salas' score but lost on the predetermined tiebreaker.
Contestants were given two hours to complete a predetermined project later scored for plumb, level, square and range, measurement, correct design, manipulation, tooling and neatness, full joints, and production. NCMCA Past President Doug Burton of Whitman Masonry in Benson served as head judge. Scores ranged from 152 to 164 points out of a possible 180.

PROSOCO News Wins Design Award
Lawrence, Kan.-based PROSOCO's quarterly newsletter, PROSOCO News, has garnered a prestigious "Magnum Opus" award for best overall design in a corporate newsletter competition that included entries from other major corporations, design firms and universities.
PROSOCO is a national manufacturer of products for cleaning, protecting and maintaining masonry, concrete and stone.
The contest was sponsored by McMurry Publishing Company's Publications Management newsletter in cooperation with the Missouri School of Journalism. PROSOCO News captured an Honorable Mention in the "Best Overall Design" category.
The more than 400 entries included publications from Halliburton, Hearst Custom Publishing and Princeton University.
PROSOCO News' mission is to educate, inform and entertain its audience concerning the use of PROSOCO products as they relate to construction industry best practices. The audience includes about 15,000 architects, contractors, distributors and trade media representatives nationwide.
