RMMI SALUTES THE 2004 MASTERS OF MASONRY DESIGN

Ann Wolter
Executive Director, Rocky Mountain
Masonry Institute

"When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece."
John Ruskin (1819-1900)
Artist, scientist, poet, philosopher, and art & architecture critic

Grand Award

Love and skill came together in spades on the evening of October 7, when the Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute (RMMI) paid tribute to 16 talented architects and their teams for designing and building the best masonry projects in Colorado and Wyoming. From a concrete masonry cathedral on the plains to a new urbanist community in the suburbs, from a brick school addition in the city to a gabled stone home in the mountains, the winning projects "represented the very best of Colorado's urban and mountain architecture," noted Dave Huotari, AIA, Chairman of the Jury and Principal of ALSC Architects, Spokane, Wash. "The projects ranged from the affordable to the monumental, but they all had two things in common - great design and a terrific understanding of natural building materials."

We honored these Masters of Masonry Design not only for their skill and creativity, but also for their and their owners' commitment to building for the future. When the award-winning teams chose to design with brick, block and stone, they chose to leave a legacy of strength, permanence, warmth and beauty for future generations.

These individuals and their firms actively shape the spaces in which we live and work, and they do it much better than they have to. They routinely triumph over tight budgets and tighter timelines to create special buildings. And they all take very seriously the job of building a better and more enduring built environment.

For that, we thank them from the bottom of our hearts, and we honor them.
