Acme Brick Granted Patent
Acme Brick Company has developed a newly patented method of engraving brick utilizing lasers that improves on the traditional brick engraving procedure. Mike Young of Acme's Engineering Department developed the technique over a two-year period.
This patented process replaces Acme's prior method of engraving bricks by sand blasting, which is the standard industry technique. The new laser process produces a highly detailed engraved brick with the depth and look of traditional engraved brick. Very detailed text and logos can be applied onto the brick using this laser process.
The laser engraving process applies intense heat onto the brick surface and changes the affected surface to a black, glass-like material. The laser follows a pre-determined path created by a custom program designed specifically for this application. Orders are entered at any Acme Brick sales office, using the new laser engraved brick order entry/production program. This data is automatically converted into a laser output file when requested by production personnel. Thus, minimal labor is required to create the laser output file required for each engraved brick. As a result, customers are able to have their individual brick delivered much faster than was possible using the older method.
The previous sand blasting process required that a large number of brick be engraved at one time to make the process cost-efficient. The laser will enable Acme personnel to place an order for any number of brick and have them produced as they are ordered.

Ohio High School Competition
On Feb. 19, 2005, the Maplewood Career Center held its first annual Ohio High School Masonry Competition. The Director of the competition, Rich Nagy, said the main goal of this competition was to help prepare the qualified students for the state competition in Columbus in April 2005.
The event had a good turnout with students from career centers located all over Ohio. The contestants were divided into two groups, the seniors and the juniors. Each group had three hours to complete the project, which consisted of a brick veneer block wall approximately 4' wide by 4' tall with different color brick patterns that were to be followed.
The students' projects were judged on many factors such as plumb, square, speed, quality, workmanship and measurement accuracy. Prize money awards were given to the top three scores in each group. Prize winners are as follows.
