MCAA's New
Safety
Software
RASHOD JOHNSON
Director of Engineering, Mason Contractors Association of America

A contractor's profit margin could be greatly affected by OSHA citations, yet no one budgets for this sometimes-costly event. The Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA) has worked very hard to improve relations with OSHA, to create and implement programs for contractors to prevent OSHA citations, and most importantly to produce a safer and more productive workplace.

Over the years, the MCAA has developed many safety programs for its members. From wall bracing to forklift training to safety software, we have always been proactive in assisting our members in the areas of occupational safety and health. Recently, we have developed a computerized safety program that, if followed properly, will aid contractors in implementing an employee health and safety program that will comply with the current OSHA regulations.

This software is fully customizable so that you can input your company's name and logo into all of the preset forms, toolbox talks and recordkeeping forms that will allow you to completely develop and print your comprehensive safety program.

There are 18 safety topics ranging from fall protection to ergonomics to substance abuse. Each safety topic has a compliance guide that outlines which OSHA regulations are to be followed, toolbox talks, training, records and reports, and model documents. Whether you have a safety program or not, this software will greatly assist you in making your job sites safer.

There are many ways MCAA has helped its members, but none more important than protecting workers. Don't wait - purchase MCAA's Safety Software today!

For more information on MCAA or its new safety software, please visit www.masoncontractors.org, or call (847) 301-0001 or toll-free (800) 536-2225.

Lift with your legs, not your back.
Use proper posture when sitting, standing or reclining.
Follow a sensible exercise program.

Masonry work can be hard on the back, but following these tips will help prevent or reduce back injuries.

J. J. Keller and Associates, Inc., has a new instructional and motivational training kit called Back Safety: A User's Guide. This training kit offers real-world advice for construction, general industry and transportation industries. Safe lifting requires the same planning, preparation and application regardless of the work environment, and Keller's video-based program addresses the various applications of proper lifting principles and techniques.

The training kit includes a 20-minute video, an instructor's guide and guidebooks. The guidebook provides an overview of key information presented in the video, as well as a two-page action card with proper lifting principles and easily performed pre-lifting stretching exercises. The kit also includes an awareness poster with illustrations for proper lifting techniques.
