ANNOUNCES WINNERS
The fourth annual Arizona Masonry Guild "Masonry: It Makes A Village design/build competition was held April 29-30 at Turf Paradise in Phoenix. This timed event pitted teams of Arizona architects and mason contractors against each other to produce the most creative and original village structures with the use of brick, block, natural stone, glass block and architectural precast.
The competition was designed to showcase the beauty and quality of masonry construction by providing an opportunity for Arizona architects and mason contractors to work side by side with each other on both the design and construction phases of the project. A total of eight teams competed in this year's event.
Industry experts judged the winning projects and winners were chosen for their creativity of design and use of materials, teamwork, craftsmanship and overall quality. The jury panel consisted of: Dennis Cahill, Director of Apprenticeship Services, Department of Commerce; Ethan Edwards, Executive Director, Yavapai County Contractors Association; and Jay Norton, Specialty Consultant.
The concept for "Masonry: It Makes A Village" was developed six years ago by Barbara Headrick, former Executive Director of the Masonry Institute of Washington.
The Arizona Masonry Guild not only sponsors this event, but has also contributed to the economic development of Arizona and the advancement of education, new product and construction standards, and enhanced safety policies. The Guild has a long-standing commitment to education, supporting programs for architectural, engineering and construction students at Arizona State University, University of Arizona and Northem Arizona University. It sponsors a number of professional state-approved continuing education programs and workshops for the engineering, architectural and construction communities.
