Washington, D.C.

Future handymen and handywomen can have fun learning about the art and craft of building at the National Building Museum's Festival of the Building Arts on September 17 from 10 am. to 4:30 pm.

Master craftspeople will lead children and adults as they lay brick, practice hammering and nail driving, create photo stands with quick-drying concrete, build a city out of boxes, thatch a roof, climb aboard construction equipment, help build a log cabin and much more. In addition to the hands-on activities, families can watch craftspeople build furniture from tree limbs and can climb aboard construction equipment at the outdoor "petting 200." A free hard hat will make youngsters part of the team and the action.

The free, one-day festival, held rain or shine, will give visitors of all ages the rare opportunity to participate in and observe traditional and contemporary building crafts. The Festival of the Building Arts is presented by The Associated General Contractors of America.

The National Building Museum, created by an act of Congress in 1980 and celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, is a private, nonprofit institution that examines and interprets American achievements in building through exhibitions, education programs and publications.

The Museum is located at 401 F Street NW, Washington, D.C., at the entrance to the Judiciary Square Metro station on the Red Line. Museum hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 pum. Admission is free; a donation of $5 is suggested.
