The NAWIC Education Foundation (NEF) recently received notification from the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) that it recognizes the value of its Certified Construction Associate (CCA) program.

The six-part CCA program covers a variety of construction fundamentals including business analysis, construction environs, construction principles, effective communication, labor relations and management techniques.

Dr. Roger Liska, chairman of the Department of Construction Science and Management at Clemson University, and longtime NEF trustee and supporter, says that this recent recognition by ACCE is a stamp of approval from an internationally recognized accreditation agency for construction education. Both Liska and Carol Kucker, CCA, CIT, CDS and a NEF trustee have been key players in working with ACCE to get recognition for NEF's programs.

The ACCE accredits construction education programs in colleges and universities that request its evaluation and meet its high standards and criteria. It is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as the accrediting agency for four-year baccalaureate degree programs, in addition to two-year associate-degree programs in construction and construction-related areas.

Currently, ACCE's Non-Degree Task Force is assessing the results of recent pilot projects to determine standards and criteria for recognizing non-degree programs, such as NEF's. Once the guidelines are in place, this will open the door for other organizations to be recognized as quality program providers.

The core purpose of the NAWIC Education Foundation is to educate the construction industry and foster the workforce of tomorrow. Its goals are to provide quality education programs for the construction industry and to promote the benefits of a career in the industry. For additional information about NEF, including its educational courses, go to www.nawiceducation.org. send an e-mail to nef@airmail.net, or call (866) 277-2883.

Biggs Awarded Honorary Member Status by ASCE

Long-time The Masonry Society (TMS) member, David T. Biggs, PE, was recently elected an Honorary Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Biggs was recognized for his advancement of structural masonry engineering through innovative engineering design, restoration and code development, and the sharing of this knowledge through service and contributions to the public. This acknowledgement of Biggs' exceptional work and leadership is truly an honor as ASCE has elected only 530 individuals to Honorary Member status since 1853. ASCE will formally recognize him at its annual convention in Los Angeles in October.

Because of his expertise and service, Biggs has been honored in many ways over the years. He has been the recipient of the Daniel W. Mead Prize and the Edmund Friedman Young Engineer Award for Professional Achievement from ASCE. He was the first to be selected Distinguished Graduate of the Department of Civil Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Both the New York State Society of Professional Engineers and the New York Association of Consulting Engineers also selected Biggs as the 2003 "Engineer of the Year."

Biggs is an active member of TMS, has served on the Board and recently published "Review of Masonry Aspects of the World Trade Center Disaster" through TMS. He chairs the Prestressed Masonry subcommittee of the Masonry Standards Joint Committee and is an author on the "Masonry Designers Guide."
