# BIA Announces 2006 Brick in Architecture Awards Winners
The Brick Industry Association (BIA) has announced the winners of its 2006 Brick in Architecture Awards, the country’s premiere architectural award featuring clay brick. This year’s winners were selected from 134 entries in 11 categories.
“The winners of the 2006 Brick in Architecture Awards represent some of the most creative and visionary projects in the country,” said Gregg Borchelt, BIA president. “These architects have demonstrated how clay brick can be used to create beautiful, sustainable, and enduring structures.”
A jury of peers judged the entries based on design excellence, technical innovation, and sustainable design. The winners were announced at the BIA’s annual Brick Forum in Scottsdale, Ariz., on March 29.
The 2006 Brick in Architecture Awards winners are:
* **Best in Class: Commercial:** Thompson Center, Chicago, Ill.; Architect: Murphy/Jahn
* **Best in Class: Educational (Higher Education):** University of Wyoming Visual Arts Facility, Laramie, Wyo.; Architect: Hacker Architects PC
* **Best in Class: Educational (K-12):** The Hockaday School, Dallas, Texas; Architect: Good Fulton & Farrell
* **Best in Class: Paving & Landscape Architecture:** Pennsylvania State University HUB Lawn, State College, Pa.; Architect: Andropogon Associates
* **Best in Class: Residential (Multi-Family):** 425 Mass Apartments, Washington, D.C.; Architect: Robert M. Swedroe Architects & Planners

# Mason Contractors Association of America Announces 2006 Skills Challenge Winners
The Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA) has announced the winners of its 2006 Skills Challenge, a competition that tests the skills of mason apprentices from across the country. The competition was held at the World of Concrete trade show in Las Vegas, Nev., on January 18.
The apprentices were judged on their technical skills, accuracy, and speed. The winners were:
* **First Place:** Justin Smith, Bricklayers Local 1, Kansas City, Mo.
* **Second Place:** Joshua Swindle, Bricklayers Local 4, Huntsville, Ala.
* **Third Place:** Jesse Shaw, Bricklayers Local 6, Albany, N.Y.
# MCAA Announces Fastest Trowel on the Block Competition Winners
The Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA) has announced the winners of its 2006 Fastest Trowel on the Block competition, a competition that tests the speed and skill of mason contractors. The competition was held at the World of Concrete trade show in Las Vegas, Nev., on January 19.
The contractors were judged on their speed, accuracy, and quality of work. The winners were:
* **First Place:** Jerry Goodman, Goodman Masonry, Kansas City, Mo.
* **Second Place:** Mike Sutter, Sutter Masonry, Denver, Colo.
